Three Quotes

54º ~ bright sun, clear skies, the nearly full moon woke me up at 2:00 a.m....where's the justice in that happening 24 hours too late to see the eclipse?

Three quotes have been haunting me these last few days.

~ "Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?"

(Mary Oliver, "The Summer Day")

~ "What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life?
The world would split open."

(Muriel Rukeyser, Houdini)

~ "To be an artist means never to avert one's eyes."

(Akira Kurosawa, The Films of Akira Kurosawa)

Whoa! I have run into the same 3 recently....though I can't remember where I ran into the can't-avert-the-eyes one. It did make me internally close them and bow my head, though.

Kathleen, Robert Olen Butler quoted Kurosawa last night on NPR, which is where I heard it. I, too, bowed my head to the power of that quote.

The other two have been floating around on multiple blogs as people reflect on the year behind and the one ahead.

Thanks for reading!

Mary Oliver ~ wow. What a wonderful writer and what a powerful quote. Thank you for the reminder and prompt.

V&V, thanks for stopping by. Glad the quotes resonated.

Sandy -- Doing a little blog-reading catch up here, and had a "synchronicity" moment reading about these three quotes that have been running through your mind. I have had my own trio of quotes running through mine for the last week or so. Hmm... maybe I will write a post about them... :). Thanks for sharing yours. I particularly love the Muriel Rukeyser.
